2008 Presenters:

Congratulations to the 18 companies chosen to present at TVC’s 15th annual New Mexico Equity Capital Symposium.

Alternative Energy:

Envara™, LLC

Albuquerque

ENVARA™, LLC has proven a patent-pending hydrothermal process to convert a variety of crop oils into jet fuel (JP-8), achieving U.S. Air Force specifications and having significantly less environmental impact than traditional petroleum-based JP-8.  ENVARA is responding to mandates to relieve dependence on foreign sources by providing the best alternative to the most purchased fuel type for the U.S. military. The USAF alone buys 3 billion gallons annually; DoD has set a goal that 50 percent of this amount will come from alternative fuel sources. ENVARA is determined to build the first conversion plant for bio JP-8 by 2010, achieving the same performance qualities as petroleum-based product, yet releasing a small fraction of the traditional CO2 emissions.  ENVARA seeks funding to demonstrate the technology and build a prototype commercial test facility.

eQsolaris, Inc.                                                                           Los Alamos

eQsolaris has developed a solar technology disruptive in its simplicity, flexibility and potential to break $500/kW, a cost barrier that until now has prevented photovoltaic arrays from becoming competitive with conventional power sources. Modeled after a leaf, nature’s most efficient solar energy collector, patent-protected eQarrays will use trace amounts of silicon to deliver solar electricity at one-fourth the cost of conventional solar arrays. The technology and business synergism comes from merging Kyosemi Corporation’s free-fall droplet photodiode Sphelar® cells with an optical and electrical connection innovation from Energy Related Devices. eQsolaris has built proof-of-concept prototypes of this novel method of solar cells that demonstrate dramatically better semiconductor utilization. Estimates for the sustainable market potential of just the Western U.S. are $1.26 billion per year. The world market is estimated to be in excess of $195 billion per year. eQsolaris is seeking capital for a pilot production plant to be located in New Mexico.

HPG, Inc.

Santa Fe

Hyperion Power Generation, Inc. (HPG) is commercializing a unique new small modular reactor (SMR) invented at Los Alamos National Laboratory that provides power for communities and industrial applications that are too far removed from conventional power companies to be practically and cost-efficiently served. Each module (aka battery) produces 70 MWt and 25MWe – enough to power 20,000 average U.S. homes or the industrial equivalent. Initially designed to dramatically improve the cost of extracting fossil fuels from oil sands and shale, the Hyperion reactor is small enough to be transported via truck, is buried underground out of harm’s way, and requires little monitoring.  Hyperion’s inability to go supercritical due to the natural regulating properties of its uranium hydride fuel, add to the reactor’s attractiveness for many applications.

Energy Efficiency:

Arrakis Corporation

Santa Fe

Arrakis Corporation is commercializing MDWater, a highly energy-efficient system to treat water and concentrate wastewater. Unlike current water treatment technologies that require large amounts of thermal or electrical energy, the MDWater takes advantage of existing low-grade heat from renewable sources or from heat generated from industrial sources.  Arrakis Corp. is working with Sandia National Laboratories to test and validate the MDWater treatment system as a way to recycle water from a variety of wastewater sources found throughout the southwest U.S.  In the first tests, the MDWater system will be used on produced water from oil and gas production. Considered one of the more contaminated wastewaters, successfully treated water can be recycled to support secondary oil recovery and oil shale extraction.  The recycled water may also be reused for agriculture, ranching and ranchland rehabilitation.

Micro/Nanotechnology:

Bio-Detector, LLC

Albuquerque

Bio-Detector technology is a marked improvement over existing immunoassay techniques for rapid, highly sensitive, automated and quantitative detection of food-borne micro-organisms. Current analysis methods are slow and generally require a complex series of tests before specific identification can be confirmed. The marketplace is demanding a more reliable detection application. The Microbe Sensor provides the capacity to detect food-borne pathogens during processing and at distribution points assuring quality control at the potential source and ensuring a high national priority of food safety. The contamination of beef, pork, chicken and raw-milk food-stock by bacterial pathogens such as E. Coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter and Listeria account for widespread severe illnesses, and sometimes death, to the consumer.  The hand-held Microbe Sensor is simple to use, inexpensive and presents no risk to human health. Future applications will include medical, environmental and homeland security.

Incitor, LLC

Albuquerque

Incitor, LLC has developed patent-pending nanotechnology that enables the production of ethanol for less than $1 per gallon; Single Strand Template Manufacturing (SSTM™) uses a completely synthetic process to produce enzymes to convert cellulose into ethanol, butanol or even jet fuel.  As cellulose is a family of sugars that exists in waste, wood and non-food plants, Incitor resolves the food versus fuel concern.  SSTM™ uses single strand DNA affixed to templates as a production platform to reduce enzyme manufacturing costs and rapidly generate new enzymes.  Incitor enzymes reduce the energy needed to produce biofuels, operate longer and faster and are more cost-effective than alternatives.  Incitor is releasing its first synthetic enzymes into the $300 million per year market in the first half of 2008, a market expected to grow to $3 billion by 2017.  Incitor seeks funding to accelerate entry into this emerging market.
